Nope, not doing it.
As I’ve done in the past, I planned to focus my March blog post on writers—choosing what to leave in, what to take out, and the characters who haunted me as I ate my egg salad sandwich. I considered exploring the discipline needed to avoid certain rabbit holes, not to fall in so deeply we struggle to crawl out. Nope. This morning, my final blog draft was too boring and the “rabbit hole” paragraph was too scary.
The last two months, I’ve been thinking more about readers, their preferences, and what makes them toss a book aside/what makes it impossible to set a book down.
The comments below are from writers. Their top priorities when writing are:
· Clarity and fence posts.
· “A character readers care about.”
· “A character readers ‘hate’ but understand their motivations.”
· Presence. Crystal clear scenes and settings that ignite my imagination but also allow me to fill in some white space.
What are your top priorities as READERS? What makes you keep reading?
It’s okay if you just say, “Nope. Not doing it.” Another suggestion, which is less drain on the brain: send me the date you believe my first poppy will open this spring. I live in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Last year it was May 26th.
